A Winner Writes...
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Sun., Apr 15, 2012

Rick Mascarini was the winner of our recent Pat Mastelotto Recidivate competition and here he is with his prize...

Rick writes "I arrived home yesterday (Friday 13th of April) from another long business excursion to find my "prize" having arrived while I was on the road. The picture was taken w/ my now trusty iPad 2 along with the P@ music playing from the same said device.  Wonderful that I can travel and have these gems playing on headphones while sitting in airplanes. Thanks again for the contests and I'm very proud to be a lucky winner!"

Cassidy Goes To Court
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Thu., Oct 6, 2011
My thanks to Albemuth for flagging up this story about David Cassidy's court action against Sony. Albemuth highlights this particular quote from the story which will ring a few bells for RF diary readers."Despite promises in his 1971 contract to provide financial statements for merchandising, Sony has "either never provided such accountings and reports, or provided such accountings and reports only begrudgingly, inconsistently, inaccurately and fraudulently."  In a letter sent to Sony in May, Cassidy’s attorney Craig Marshall, requested a full accounting of the merchandise."

Aaron Jumps The Grooveshark
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Wed., Oct 5, 2011
My thanks to David Jennings who got in touch with this career update on a member of Grooveshark's team.

Robert Fripp went through Aaron Ford’s resume/cv in his diary.

And here’s the latest update to his career path, courtesy of Digital Music News

"Grooveshark Director of Content Acquisition Aaron Ford is now leaving the company, according to details shared with Digital Music News. We thought Ford had VP stripes, but that was quickly ’downgraded’... "Like many start-ups, Grooveshark is sometimes loose with titles for lower level employees," Grooveshark general counsel Marshall Custer corrected. "

So now Vice President and Director are "lower level employees"? Job title inflation is evidently rampant.

Bill Talks & The Humans On Tour
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Fri., Sep 30, 2011
Here’s an interview with Bill Rieflin where he talks about his work in various bands including Ministry, REM, and latterly, The Humans. Staying with The Humans, here’s a message just in...

THE HUMANS HIT THE UK ROAD AFTER TAKING NYC BY STORM

After 4-star album reviews, and standing ovations in the US for their east Coast tour, Bill Rieflin, Toyah Willcox and Chris Wong hit the road in the UK for the SUGAR RUSH TOUR. The new material which will be heard live on this tour combines haunting soundscapes, edgy experiments and sweet melodies, Sugar Rush develops further the dynamic eclecticism of the band’s debut with its accessible yet uncompromising approach.

REVIEW EXCERPT  “Songs like Fragment Pool and Pebble had a flow to it that drew you in and held your attention. Sea Of Size was one of the highlights of the set - a piece that drifted through the air and oozed a quiet sort of power. Wong, Rieflin, and the Igor with no last name created an interlocking tapestry for Toyah Willcox to glide over. Most impressive. Quicksilver and Telekinesis, both from the 1st Humans disc, were audio fairy tales for adults - bizarre little tales of life, slightly skewed. Twisted Soul led to the massively electric Put A Woman On The Moon, and the show ended with the caffeine rush of Demigod. The fun romp that was their cover of These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ served as encore. An incredible evening! Bring this band back as soon as humanly possible!”

THE HUMANS second album SUGAR RUSH will be available to buy from the tour and features guest ’Human’ Robert Fripp on all tracks. A special code inside the album allows access to download three live tracks recorded at Scala London last year and featuring ROBERT FRIPP.

And The Winner Is...

Congratulations to Claas Kazzer of Leipzig who wins himself a copy of the new album by Levin Torn White. His name was picked from the fickle fedora of fate and he was able to tell me that the album was produced by Tony Levin and Scott Schorr.

And my thanks to Gerard Boland for sending me this picture of himself with his prize from our last competition - UMA's Hymn To Undiscovered Land

Good Night Vienna!
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Thu., Sep 29, 2011
My thanks to Lee Huntington who sent this review of the 2OAPT gig in Vienna, VA on 24th September.

The small venue was packed to see members of King Crimson on the same stage for the first time in this country in about three years. Tony Levin’s Stick Men and the Adrian Belew Power Trio, on the 5th date of their current US tour brought a mix of their own repertoires and classic Crimson to a very appreciative audience. Stick Men opened, with Tony announcing that usually they play a lot of King Crimson in their sets, but that they were holding those back for the "Crim-centric encore."

They did, however, pull out "Vrooom Vrooom" late in their set, much to the crowd’s delight, and closed with that Russian folk song, "The Firebird Suite" in true KC style. The Power Trio’s set, likewise, stayed with Adrian’s non-Crimson work opening with "Young Lions" and killing it with "Madness." The one exception in their set was a wonderful "Neurotica."

The Crim-centric portion of the evening, of course, was what brought some portion of the audience out and it didn’t disappoint, spanning the repertoire from "Red" to "Frame by Frame" and "One Time."  "Dinosaur" and "One Time," from "Thrak," were the most recent pieces. It’s to be hoped that as the Double Power Trio gels on the road more of that era’s music will appear.

The audience was very appreciative of the newer members of the family, Markus Reuter, Julie Slick, and Tobias Ralph. There were many comments like, "who’s that guy playing Fripp’s stuff but standing in the light?" and "Wow, she can really SHRED that thing!"

It’s a great thing for this music that while this tour is continuing to bring members of King Crimson out to their fans, it is also showcasing some of the young, and exceptional, musicians that will continue it’s growth into the future.

My thanks to Lee and my thanks also to Raffaella for this perspective of the same gig over on her blog
