The second night of the double duo’s final tour shows things are a little creaky. After a confident build during Dangerous Curves, Level Five falters badly at the beginning with the guitarists in places they probably didn’t want to be in. Though quickly rectified, Crimson seem somewhat rattled. ProzaKc Blues is dogged by some equipment troubles that takes out some of Belew’s FX but in doing so creates some interesting spaces within the track, taken here at a fair old lick.

Energy-wise the set really takes of with FaKcts Of Life, including an absolutely scorching revved up section from Fripp.

The Power To Believe seems to open up a mood or feeling that’s not too far removed from the kind of reverie which The Sheltering Sky would confer upon the setlists of previous incarnations. Less static in character, the combination of the bell-like electronic percussion, the gentle strings and the final ascending guitar solo, creates something rather magical.

An uneven gig in places largely due to some equipment and tuning trouble but not without some of that Crimson presence and power. Fripp’s take on the gig? “Crimson managed to discover new wrinkles where old wrinkles are well furrowed already, but with spirit & some strong playing. A generous, supportive audience. During the final encore, Red, a battery of flashes erupted. They were probably not aimed at me, but my show was killed stone dead. What a pity. After last night, performance seemed an option again.”

Just about perfect to me
The second show in more than three months gets off to a flying start with Dangerous Curves. Level Five and ProzaKc Blues may have a shaky moment or two but there’s a driving energy throughout the entire show that makes this performance one that I return to often.

I Was There!!
What a pleasure it is to actually own a King Crimson gig for which I was in attendance. Listening to this 10 years after it was performed brings back some great memories. Sure, there are some bum notes and rough things at the beginning but once things take off, boy do they take off. The fact that I actually was in the audience for this gig makes it even more special. I can close my eyes and still remember it as if it just happened. Now here’s hoping that DGMLive will release the March 30th 2003 gig from The Grove in Anaheim very soon. I was in the audience for that one too and in my opinion, the Grove gig was a lot stronger than the HOB gig (although they were both great). Thank you, DGMLive for this great souvenir of a great concert I had the pleasure of being a part of.
